Dean of First-Year Students

S/he will develop programming for and outreach to first-year students both during the summer before matriculation and during the academic year, coordinate information to faculty advisors, track students’ progress and convey information to their subsequent upperclass deans, work closely with colleagues and student leaders on planning and implementing the Customs orientation program, liaise with the Office of Admission, and provide general counseling, academic advice, support and referral to students. S/he will serve as a member of various campus committees and participate in the Dean-on-Call rotation.

The six Deans, who also hold the title Associate Dean of the College, have distinctive portfolios but share general duties that include the interpretation of college academic and social regulations, crisis intervention, problem-solving, policy development and implementation, and referral of students to appropriate College resources. These areas currently include Academic Affairs, Student Life, Multicultural Affairs, International Academic Programs, Career and Professional Advising, and First-Year Programs. A Master’s degree is required; a PhD or other terminal degree is highly desirable. Candidates from a variety of backgrounds will be considered, but five to seven years of experience in higher education, working directly with students, families and faculty, are anticipated. Specific experience working with first-year students and familiarity with a variety of first-year issues are highly desirable. We are looking for a dynamic and engaging leader with the ability to facilitate dialogue and forge alliances across constituencies, and who has a demonstrated commitment to student development with an emphasis on personal agency and responsibility.
