Two-Year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities
The John B. Hurford ’60 Center for the Arts and Humanities of Haverford College invites applications for a two-year Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Humanities to begin Fall 2013 (see http://www.haverford.edu/HHC/mellon_post-doctoral_program/index.php for details). We seek scholars interested in the anarchist tradition and its historical and contemporary influence on art, politics, and culture. Women and members of underrepresented minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.
Area of specialization is open, but might include history, history of art, music, political science, political economy, anthropology, literature, sociology, philosophy, and cultural studies, among other possibilities. Scholars with broad historical and interdisciplinary interests are encouraged to apply.
During the first year of the program, the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow will participate in a yearlong faculty seminar led by Associate Professor Craig Borowiak (Political Science) entitled “The Anarchist Tradition, Revisited.” Pushing beyond popular caricatures of conspiratorial bomb throwers and adolescent rebels, this seminar takes anarchism seriously as a political and cultural tradition with its own philosophies, aesthetics, histories, and modes of social mobilization. The seminar will engage both classic anarchist writings and contemporary expressions of anarchist political philosophy. The seminar will focus not only on anarchism’s anti-authority message but also on its message of social cooperation and mutual aid. Seminar participants will examine the different forms that anarchism has taken and the extent of anarchism’s influence on different social movements around the world. We will also examine some of the ways that anarchist philosophy has come to be reflected in music, art, drama, and literature (for a more detailed description, see http://www.haverford.edu/HHC/forfaculty/seminars.php). In the second year, the Fellow will organize and present a spring symposium related to his or her field funded by the Hurford Center.
During each of the four semesters at Haverford College, the Fellow will teach one course at the introductory/intermediate or advanced level. Applicants should submit two brief course proposals related to their area of interest, one for a broad-based introductory course, the other for a more specialized or advanced course. The successful candidate will demonstrate readiness to teach a diverse student body.
Candidates who have received the Ph.D. in 2008 at the earliest, or who have completed the requirements for the Ph.D. by the application deadline of January 31, 2013 are eligible.
