Baseball Falls to Rutgers-Camden, 12-5, in Season Opener

3/3/08 - The Scarlet Raptors erupted for eight runs in the middle innings to beat the Fords.
CAMDEN, N.J. – The Haverford College baseball team opened the 2008 season with a 12-5 loss to Rutgers-Camden at Campbell’s Field Monday afternoon. The game was called in the bottom of the eighth inning due to darkness.
Dean Laganosky, Drew Wilcox and Jake Kaden collected two hits a piece for the Fords. Evan Tibbetts drove in two runs and Jeff Lichtstein scored two runs.
The teams traded leads three times in the early innings, with both clubs scoring in the first inning and the Raptors adding a run in the third to take a 2-1 edge. Haverford (0-1) tallied a pair of runs in the fourth on three hits, including RBI singles by Kaden and Laganosky.
Lichstein led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kaden followed with the RBI single that knocked Scarlet Raptors’ starter Jordan Cohen out of the game. Kaden went from first to third on a Rutgers-Camden (4-2) fielding error hit by Tibbetts. With one out Laganosky singled to right center, scoring Kaden. Tibbets tried to score from second on the play, but was thrown out at the plate on the relay.
That rally gave the Fords a 3-2 advantage, but the Rutgers-Camden took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fourth off Haverford starter Donny Poster (0-1). The inning was sparked by Shawn Park, who went 3-for-3 with four runs and one RBI on the day. He opened with a single to left and raced all the way to third base when the ball scooted past Tibbetts for a two-base error. Greg Hunt walked and advanced to second on a short passed ball. One out later, Scott Fruits had an infield single to plate Park.
Dean Straga singled to center field, scoring Hunt to give Rutgers-Camden the lead for good. The Raptors tacked on two runs in the fifth on a two-run single by Fruits. They put the game away in a four-run sixth inning, which featured four hits, including a two-run single by Kyle Ballay Parks and Fruits each added RBI singles in the frame.
Eric Bosworth (1-1), the second of three Raptor pitchers registered the win. Bosworth worked 3-2/3 innings, allowing three hits, three walks and two earned runs. He struck out one.
The Fords scored twice in the seventh on a two-out RBI single by Tibbetts.
Haverford hosts Arcadia University on Tuesday at 3 p.m. in its home opener at Class of ’16 Field.
