Fencing Places Two in NCAA Regional Final
MADISON, N.J. - The Haverford College fencing teams competed at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Fencing Championships at Drew University on Sunday. Fifteen Haverford fencers qualified and 13 competed.
Two made the final round; Halli Melnitsky, women's sabre fencer, placed fourth, and Emma Buckingham, women's epee, placed sixth. This is the first time Haverford has placed more than one fencer in the top six of an NCAA Regional competition.
On the men's side, the highest finish went to freshman epeeist Remy Olson. Finishing 13th, he was one place out of the final round of 12.
The NCAA Mid-Atlantic region qualifies six epeeists and seven sabrists to the National Championships. It is unclear whether Melnitsky or Buckingham have qualified, due to a Strength-of -Season Factor which affects the final ranking of qualifiers. Melnitsky is currently the "At-Large" bid for the region, but will have to wait until later this week for an official announcement.
