
Beyond the Classroom
A Haverford student's education doesn't end with the academic year. This summer, as in years past, the three campus Centers—the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship, the John B. Hurford '60 Humanities Center and the Marian E. Koshland Integrated Science Center—sponsored summer work, research and internships for almost 200 students. Whether they interned at a day clinic in South Africa; conducted research in a lab at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts; or worked for the Philadelphia Fringe festival a mere 10 miles from campus, students broadened their horizons and learned valuable new skills that will inform their classroom work when they return to campus in the fall.

- Hannah Solomon-Straus '12 studied the political dynamics of oil production in the Caucasus region at the Foreign Policy Research Institute
- Matt Cebul '13 studied the current events of the recent Arab Spring and its impact on Middle Eastern politics at the Foreign Policy Research Institute
- Hannah Miller '13 spent her internship teaching at a school and orphanage in Guatemala
- Elizabeth Levitan '11 interned in Peru at the Sacred Valley Project, which works to provide rural indigeous girls with education and leadership opportunities
- Kattie Wettick '11 studied urban design and conducted research on sustainable architecture at HafenCity University in Hamberg, Germany
- Becca DeHority '12 interned at a clinic in the township of Guguletu outside of Cape Town, South Africa
- Martin Richard '14 studied the ocean environment of the Cambian era at the Johnston Group Lab at Harvard
- Olivia Coburn-Flynn '13 and Nicole Lantz '12 shadowed doctors at the Holy Family Hospital in Koderma, India
- Sam Gant '13 worked for the Foundation for Sustainable Development, which placed him at the AIDS Support Organization in Jinja, Uganda
- Liz Crooks '12 interned with the Library Company of Philadelphia sorting through a recently acquired collection of 19th century woodblocks
- Rosalie Hooper '12 conducted research in historical archives in Philadelphia on the role of race, gender and sex in the destruction of Pennsylvania Hall, an abolitionist meeting place
- Katie Monroe '12 interned at the Pennsylvania Humanities Council in Philadelphia
- Jacob Horn '13 and Jenny Sanford '13 both interned at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
- Elinor Hickey '12 interned at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the Mutter Museum
- Michael Franklin '12 interned with the Mapping Du Bois Project at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design
