Buckingham and Melnitsky Place First at EWFC Individual Championships
2/17/08 - Emma Buckingham (epee) and Halli Melnitsky (sabre) won their respective weapons and were named EWFC Fencers of the Year on Sunday.
HOBOKEN, N.J. – Emma Buckingham (epee) and Halli Melnitsky (sabre) of the Haverford College women’s fencing team won their respective weapons on Sunday at the EWFC Individual Championships held at Stevens Tech. Sarah Turkus (sabre), Kelsey Cantwell (sabre), Rebecca Church (foil) and Melanie Preston (epee) all finished in the top-10 of their weapons.
Buckingham went 14-3 en route to her first-place finish. Preston finished sixth in the epee going 11-6.
Church finished fourth in the foil with a 14-4 record. Lara Pollack and Monica Kishore also competed in the foil. Pollack placed 15th, going 5-13, while Kishore finished 17th with a 3-15 record.
Melnitsky went a perfect 17-0 in the sabre on her way to first place. Turkus and Cantwell each went 9-8, but Turkus finished eighth because she scored more touches.
Haverford will be in action next Saturday in the NIWFA Championships at Hunter College.
