Fords Fall to Hopkins, 64-63, in Fast-Paced Overtime Affair

2/9/08 - For the second time eight days Haverford fell in overtime.
HAVERFORD, Pa. – Saturday’s men’s basketball game between Johns Hopkins and Haverford had the feeling from early on that the team that scored last would win. And that is exactly what happened in overtime as the Blue Jays Scott Weisenfeld’s floater through the lane with four seconds remaining beat Haverford.
Haverford’s (5-15, 3-11) Chaz Thomas and Johns Hopkins (13-8, 9-5) Andrew Farber-Miller led all scorers with 21 points. This fast-paced affair saw 14 tied scores and 18 lead change. These teams were so evenly matched that both made 24 field goals and the Blue Jays (5) made just one more trey than Haverford.
The first half was very closely contested and saw five lead changes and eight tied scores. The biggest lead was by Haverford (five - three different times). Haverford went up, 25-20, on a trey by Matt Palmer at the five-minute and twenty-second mark. After the Blue Jays cut it to three, Chaz Thomas hit a fade-a-way jumper from the corner with three minutes to play that extended the lead back to five.
Hopkins responded by scoring the next five points to tie the score at 29-all with two minutes remaining. Sam Permutt hit a jumper to put the Fords up two, but Pat O’Connell made both his free throws with 47 seconds left to tie the score, 31-31, heading into intermission.
The second half remained just as tight with the largest lead coming just under 14 minutes when the Blue Jays led by six. The Fords answered right back with a three by Thomas and a layup by Matthew Stitt to pull within one, 41-40. On the Fords next possession Thomas made a jumper to put Haverford on top, 42-41.
From that point on the largest lead by either team was three. Down the stretch Haverford tightened up its defense and did not allow the Blue Jays to score for nearly four minutes. Hopkins ended its cold streak at the right time. Trailing by three with 35 seconds left, Doug Polster made a three to tie the game at 55-all.
Haverford tried to hold for the last shot, but when Thomas drove to the basket he was double-teamed at the elbow and in mid-air he tried to kick it out to Palmer, but Palmer cut to the basket and Thomas’ pass went out of bounds. With four seconds remaining Colin Kamm drove into the lane, but his jumper rattled off the rim sending the game to overtime.
The scored was tied three times in overtime with the last coming at 62 on a layup by Kamm. After a Fords turnover Hopkins called a timeout. Inbounding under its own basket, Weisenfelds’ pass was intercepted by Thomas who was fouled immediately with 14.4 seconds left. Going to the line for two shots, Thomas made the first and missed the second for a 63-62 lead. Weisenfeld made up for his errant pass by going the length of the floor and sinking his runner in the lane with four ticks left on the clock. Mike Fratangelo took the inbound and threw up a three-pointer at the buzzer that was no good and the Blue Jays escaped with a 64-63 win.
The Fords are back in action this Wednesday at Washington (Md.) at 7:30 p.m.
