Haverford Senior wins Poster Session Prize

Massiel Chavez received the Kittleman Award for her poster presentation at the 3rd Annual Undergraduate Student Poster Session sponsored by the Philadelphia section of the American Chemical Society. The poster session was held at Temple University on January 24, 2008. Several other Haverford students also presented posters at this event.

Massiel's poster was based on research she has performed in Prof. Karin Akerfeldt's research lab, where she worked in the summer of 2007 as a paid research assistant and where she is now working for credit on her senior research project. Massiel will graduate in May with both a Chemistry major and an Area of Concentration in Biochemistry. She is looking for a job as a laboratory research assistant, and plans eventually to attend graduate school.

Massiel's poster is entitled "Synthesis and Study of Novel, Self-Aggregating Porphyrin-Peptide Nanowires". Co-authors are Haein Kim, Steven VanName, Ashley Eldredge-Martin and Karin Åkerfeldt. The poster is on display in the second floor east lounge (E214) of the Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center at Haverford.
