Haverford Can't Sink Last Shot, Fall To Swarthmore, 57-56

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Kathryn Stockbower’s lay-up with 43 second left in regulation gave Swarthmore College the one point edge, 57-56, over Haverford College Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action at Gooding Arena.
Brittany Lattisaw notched a double-double with 21 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Fords. It was Lattisaw’s fifth double-double in the last seven games. She also had seven blocked shots, which ties her for third most in a single game. As a team, the Fords had 12 blocks, which ties them for the most in a game. Haverford also had 12 blocks against Washington in 2006 and Bryn Mawr in 2007.
Stockbower led the Garnet with 17 points and 21 rebounds. Laura Popovics netted 12 points for Swarthmore. Kathleen Abels scored 12 points for the Fords.
The first half was a battle with the teams trading baskets and leads. At the 6:09 mark and the game tied at 21-all, Haverford ended the half strong with a 10-4 run to take a 31-25 lead into the locker room.
However, Swarthmore started the second half with energy and tied the game at 35 at the 13:21 mark. The Garnet took a two-point lead on a jumper by Stockbower. Swathmore built its lead to eight with nine minutes to go. Haverford would not go quietly and made it a two-point game, 52-50, with four left.
The Fords took a one-point lead, 56-55, with one minute left, but Swarthmore answered with a field goal to regain the one point lead. Haverford had the last shot but a lay-up by Lattisaw hit off the rim.
Swarthmore improves to 5-12 overall and 2-9 in the Centennial Conference. Haverford is not 3-15, 0-12 in the conference. The Fords hit the court next on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at Dickinson. Tip-off set for 2 p.m.
