Fencers strong against visiting big names

HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College men's and women's fencing teams hosted the Haverford Invitational in Alumni Field House all day Sunday with the men posting a 5-1 record while the women finished 2-2 on the day against big-name schools from North Carolina, Florida and Virginia.

The Haverford men topped Johns Hopkins (beating the Blue Jays for the first time in four seasons), Virginia, William & Mary, Florida and Virginia Tech, and lost to North Carolina. The Fords women picked up wins over Florida and Va. Tech against losses to North Carolina and Hopkins.

The men's sabrists posted a combined 37-17 mark for the day to lead the Fords. Aaron Ruby was 13-2 for Haverford.

Not far behind in pushing the Fords to their five wins, and led by freshman Ben Van Son's 11-1 mark, were the foilists with a 36-18 record. Haverford's epeeists were led by Andrew Bosticks' 9-3 mark on a 34-20 day for the group.

The women's foilists posted the best overall record for Haverford in their four matches, combining for a 20-16 mark. Freshman Rupinder Garcha was 7-3 in her foil bouts for Haverford.

Emma Buckingham was 9-3 in her epee bouts while teammate Alejandra Chacon posted a 7-4 mark to lead the Haverford sabrists.

Both the men and women will take to the road for their next outing, Sunday bouts at the Vassar Invitational in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
