Fords fencers battled nation's best at Temple Open

PHILADELPHIA – The Haverford College men's and women's fencing teams participated in the Temple Fencing Open over the weekend, squaring off against opponents from some of the powerhouse teams in the country such as Notre Dame, Penn State and Penn.

Haverford's highest placing finisher at the largest individual collegiate meet in the nation was epeeist Emma Buckingham. The senior co-captain rolled to her first appearance in the finals, finishing eighth out of a field of 72 competitors. On the men's side for Haverford, senior co-captain Jared Forbus was the highest finisher, placing just out of the sabre finals in ninth place out of 92.

The women sabrists for Haverford were paced by Kayla Feldman's 59th place, and in men's epee Andrew Bostick was the top Ford finishing 24th.

In the foil, freshman Rupinder Garcha led the Haverford women with a 13th place finish while fellow newcomer Ben Van Son led the men with a 16th place.

The fencers look to take the experience gained at Temple into their next meet, the Haverford Invitational next Sunday beginning at 10 a.m. in Alumni Field House on campus. Along with the Fords, teams from Johns Hopkins, the University of Florida, Virginia and Virginia Tech, William and Mary, and North Carolina-Chapel Hill will compete in an all day marathon of fencing action.
