HAVERFORD, Pa. – The Haverford College Department of Athletics honored the 2009 co-recipients of the Archibald MacIntosh '21 Award, Zack Cohen and Kate Comey, at a banquet in their honor Thursday evening on campus.

Cohen, a sophomore on the men’s lacrosse team, played in every game for the Centennial Conference regular season champion Fords and was a key contributor on a team that made its second consecutive NCAA tournament appearance.

“A successful balance between academics and athletics is not easily accomplished at Haverford as the environment encourages consistent excellence in both fields of endeavor,” said Cohen. “I am grateful and honored to have been selected to receive this award from among such a distinguished field of athletic peers at the College.”

Cohen finished fifth on the team in points with 23, a total generated from 11 goals and 12 assists during the 17-game season. In just his third game as a collegian he scored the game-winning goal in overtime against No. 13 St. Lawrence (N.Y.). Midway through the season Cohen registered four assists in a home contest against a No. 16 Tufts squad. Further proving his ‘big-game’ prowess, he netted one goal and three assists for a four-point outing against Salisbury (Md.) in the Fords’ NCAA tournament second-round game.

“Zack has consistently represented our team well on and off the field and in the classroom,” said head coach Colin Bathory ’99. “He continues to challenge himself as a student, and athletically he works hard to earn his role in our offensive midfield. Zack’s GPA and 23 points as a freshman speak for themselves.”

Comey, a sophomore volleyball player, was an integral part of the 2008 Centennial Conference championship team and led the conference in assists per set with 10.41 average.

“It is truly an honor to be this year’s co-recipient of this award,” said Comey “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be a student-athlete at Haverford, where I am able to pursue all of my interests—both academic and athletic—at a high level. It is a wonderful tradition that the alumni society presents an award like this, because it shows the extent to which Haverford’s alumni support current student-athletes.”

As a freshman Comey filled the shoes of the school’s all-time assists leader, Emily Hinchcliff ’08, and ran an offense that topped the Centennial Conference in kills (1,472) and kills per set (12.80). Less than two years into her career Comey is already second in program history in assists.

“Academically, she’s brilliant, and athletically, she was challenged to play beyond her years as a freshman,” said head coach Amy Bergin. “She accepted that and never looked back. Kate doesn’t accept less than 100 percent from herself on the court or in the classroom.”

"Kate is not only my advisee, but was among the top students in my multivariable calculus class," said her advisor Josh Sabloff. "She has pursued, with evident relish, a variety of academic subjects, from religion to education to mathematics. Kate was deeply engaged in and open to new ideas, and can articulate her understandings clearly both to classmates and professors."
