Barbara Allen is Haverford's new Gift Acknowledgement Coordinator, on the third floor of Founders Hall. The Gift Acknowledgement Coordinator's responsibilities include maintaining gift acknowledgements, sending all of Haverford's donors receipts for their gifts, opening new donor accounts, coordinating Haverford's matching gift program, processing securities, processing campaign reports, and providing customer service to donors.

Barbara, a native of Berea, Ohio, has lived all over the country with her husband, 13-year-old daughter, and two dogs since earning her degree at California State University. Her husband received a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, and is now on the faculty at Temple University after leaving Georgia Southern University, where Barbara was the Development Officer for Scholarships and Endowments. Barbara's daughter is currently attending Haverford Middle School.

Barbara says that while her work experience has been as varied as her life experience, she finds working in Institutional Advancement particularly rewarding, as she enjoys fundraising, working with people, and serving a worthy cause while enhancing the quality of higher education.

Steve Elkin is Haverford College's new Major Gifts Officer, and as such will be responsible for building relationships with alumni and friends of the College who support Haverford as volunteers and donors. He expects to be traveling a great deal, so that he can interact with his contacts face-to-face and foster their participation in the continued life of the community. Steve's journey to Haverford has been a long one, crossing the 1,000 miles from Grinnell College in Iowa, where he was the Associate Director of the Pioneer Fund, and from whence he graduated in 1992.

Steve is enjoying the change in activity and sophistication of coming to Philadelphia from Iowa. He is a Michigan native, and lived for a decade in Minneapolis, but this is his first time living on the East Coast. He's glad to be able to bring his commitment to and enthusiasm for higher education to his new position at Haverford, and hopes that his organizational and communication skills help to further Haverford's distinctive collaborative approach.

Courtney Shaw comes to Haverford College from the staff at Philadelphia University, and is our new Assistant to the Provost. She works on the first floor of Founders Hall, where she processes faculty administrative matters, such as grants, reimbursement, and purchasing. Once she is settled in, she expects to soon be coordinating the documentation for Academic Council, as well as other councils and committees.

In her free time, Courtney is an active person and avid music fan who enjoys practicing yoga, kayaking, and snorkeling. She also loves to travel, and takes mini-breaks at the Jersey Shore whenever she doesn't have the time to be off on another adventure. She is looking forward to working at Haverford because she feels that elements of our community — like the Honor Code — indicate an impressive standard of integrity. Her experience here thus far has bolstered that belief, as everyone that she has encountered on campus has been extremely welcoming and helpful.

Deborah Wiediger is ensconced on the third floor of Founders Hall as Haverford College's new Director of Annual Giving. She is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Phonathon program, reunion fundraising, the senior class gift drive, and the parents' fund, to name but a few projects.

Prior to coming to Haverford, Deb worked at Dickinson College for four-and-a-half years, and she is looking forward to being an enthusiastic and creative part of another hardworking and dedicated team here at Haverford.

The Strawbridge Observatory at Haverford College houses 12-inch and 16-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes which are actively used by students in Haverford astronomy classes.
