#16 Volleyball Silences Bulldogs, 3-0

11/8/07 - Haverford ties program record for wins in a season with 3-0 sweep of DeSales in the first round of the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Volleyball Regional Tournament.
HAVERFORD, PA - The 16th-ranked Haverford volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (30-15, 30-15, 30-23) victory in front of a Gooding Arena record volleyball crowd over DeSales Thursday evening in first round action of the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Volleyball Regional Tournament. The second-seeded Fords' pushed their overall record to 30-2, tying their program record for wins in a season. DeSales, the seventh-seed in the region, dropped 21-10 with the loss.
Haverford jumped out to leads of 5-0 and 9-3 in game one, however DeSales was able to get within 11-8 highlighted by three straight aces from Kylie Fehnel. The Fords' responded by opening up the score to 19-10 en route to the 30-15 game one win.
The Fords' carried their momentum into game two, starting the game with a 15-4 edge. Haverford handled DeSales the rest of the game on its way to its second-straight 30-15 victory.
Haverford trailed for the only time in the match in game three, falling behind 12-10. The Fords came back with a 10-3 run and ended the match on a convincing kill by sophomore outside hitter Rebecca Salvo.
Sophomore middle hitter and Centennial Conference Player of the Year Rachel Salvo led Haverford with 16 kills and four blocks. Rachel Salvo also had a hitting percentage of .400 and registered eight digs. Twin sister Rebecca Salvo had 13 kills, a .407 hitting percentage and 14 digs with three blocks.
Senior setter Emily Hinchcliff dished out 39 assists and had six digs, while senior outside hitter Laura Nuyen tallied nine kills with a .450 hitting percentage and 12 digs. Freshman Kelsey Cantwell logged two service aces with ten digs while senior K'Lynn Solt had eight kills and three blocks.
The Fords hit .297 in game one, .357 in game two and .432 in game three, cumulatively hitting .366 in the match.
DeSales was led by Jen Mellon's nine kills and Sharon Uliana's 27 assists.
The Fords' also won 30 games in 2000 (30-6) under then head coach Jim Haney.
Haverford will take on third-seeded Elizabethtown on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The two teams previously met on September 12th, when Haverford bested the Blue Jays 3-2, after defeating nationally-ranked Stevens, 3-1, earlier that evening.
