Volleyball Wins Second Consecutive Centennial Conference Championship

11/4/07 - Haverford sweeps McDaniel, 3-0, en route to second straight Centennial volleyball crown.
HAVERFORD, PA - Top-seeded Haverford won its second consecutive Centennial Conference Volleyball Championship Sunday afternoon with a convincing 3-0 (30-19, 30-18, 30-24) sweep of third-seeded McDaniel. The Fords' Centennial Championship secures an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament. The NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional will be held at Haverford this Thursday through Saturday.
Haverford used an 11-5 run to close out game one and a 10-4 run to end game two to race out to a 2-0 advantage in the match. Down 22-19 in game three, Haverford ran off three straight points to knot the game at 22. The game moved to a 23-23 tie before Haverford rattled off a 7-1 run to end the match, highlighted by a match-ending kill by Centennial Player of the Year Rachel Salvo from All-Centennial setter Emily Hinchcliff.
Hinchcliff set a program record for assists in a three-game match with 49, and added 16 digs in the victory for Haverford. Sophomore Rebecca Salvo pounded down a match-high 19 kills with a .474 hitting percentage (one error in 38 attempts). Rachel Salvo had 12 kills (.417 hitting %), and a match-high 23 digs. Senior outside hitter Laura Nuyen contributed 11 kills and 17 digs, while freshman Kelsey Cantwell played steady defense and had 17 digs with four service aces. Seniors K'Lynn Solt and Dana Mullenhard each had three blocks in the victory for the Fords'.
Sara Hanlon led McDaniel with 11 kills and a .360 hitting percentage. Kristen Nuckles dished out 25 assists and had nine digs for the Green Terror in the loss.
"Over the past week we have accomplished two of our three team goals set at the beginning of the season. We won the regular season championship and now have our second Centennial title. Now it is time to make an impact on the national level."
Haverford hit .364 in game one and .419 in game two, finishing the match with a .288 hitting percentage as a team. McDaniel hit .109 as a team in the match. The Green Terror had nine receiving errors and five service errors to the Fords' four receiving errors and three service errors.
Pairings and match-times for this week's NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament will be announced late Sunday night, and will be posted Monday morning.
