HAVERFORD, PA - The Haverford volleyball team, ranked 15th in Division III and the top-seed in this year's Centennial Conference tournament, successfully completed its first step to a second-straight conference championship with a 3-1 (30-22, 30-27, 19-30, 30-19) victory over fourth-seeded Gettysburg in a semifinal match Saturday afternoon.
The Fords' jumped out to an 11-2 lead in game one, highlighted by two service aces by senior outside hitter Dana Mullenhard. Haverford cruised to the 30-22 game one win, and again jumped out to a modest 11-7 advantage in game two. The Bullets caught up to the Fords, pulling within 21-20, but Haverford rattled off four straight points en route to the 30-27 game two win.
The tides turned in game three, as Gettysburg was able to dig everything Haverford hit its way. The Bullets used a 14-5 run en route to their game three, 30-19, victory.
The Fords' jumped out to a 6-2 edge in game four, temporarily ending any momentum the Bullets had going from game three. However, Gettysburg scored five straight points to knot the game at 17, forcing Haverford head coach Amy Bergin to call a timeout. Bergin's coaching strategy worked, as Haverford scored seven straight points after the one minute timeout. Up 26-19, the Fords' closed out the match with four straight points, which included a match-ending kill by sophomore Rebecca Salvo setup by senior setter Emily Hinchcliff.
Rebecca Salvo finished the match with match-highs of 15 kills and 23 digs. Sophomore middle hitter and Centennial Player of the Year Rachel Salvo added 12 kills and 12 digs, Senior outside hitter Dana Mullenhard contributed ten kills while Hinchcliff added 44 assists. Senior Laura Nuyen and freshman Kelsey Cantwell had 15 and 18 digs, respectively, while senior middle hitter K'Lynn Solt had six kills and two blocks.
Meghan McConville, Stephanie Rickabaugh, and Katie Heffner all had nine kills for Gettysburg. Amanda Krampf dished out 35 assists in the losing effort for the Bullets (18-13 overall).
Haverford (28-2) will take on third-seeded McDaniel (16-8) in the Centennial Conference Tournament Championship match on Sunday at 1 p.m. McDaniel will be gunning for its first-ever CC championship after defeating second-seeded Johns Hopkins, 3-2, earlier Saturday in the other Centennial semifinal match. The Fords' defeated the Green Terror on October 27th, 3-0, at McDaniel, in the two teams only match of the season.
