Classics Professor Bret Mulligan to Head Medieval Latin Studies Group

Assistant Professor of Classics, Bret Mulligan, was recently selected to head the Medieval Latin Studies Group, a professional association that promotes the study of Medieval Latin language and literature from Late Antiquity to the early Renaissance. Beginning in 2010, Mulligan will serve a five year term as the group's Secretary-Treasurer.

"It is a great honor to be selected for this position," said Mulligan. "In recent decades, late Antiquity and the reception of the Classical tradition has been recognized as a vital area in the study of western intellectual history. I look forward to facilitating this scholarly conversation." Mulligan studies the literature and culture of Late Antiquity, the transitional period from Classical antiquity to the Middle Ages.

The Medieval Latin Studies Group (MLSG) has approximately 130 members. It seeks to facilitate research in Medieval Latin language and literature and in the Classical tradition from Late Antiquity to the early Renaissance, to support and enhance the presence of Medieval Latin in Classics departments, to provide a bridge between Classics and Medieval Studies, and to advance the study of Medieval Latin in schools, colleges, and universities. It also sponsors an annual panel of papers at the meeting of the American Philological Association (APA).
