Serving on the staff of Haverford College’s John B. Hurford ’60 Center for the Arts and Humanities and reporting to the HCAH Director, the Curator and Programs Coordinator partners with the Center’s Exhibitions Coordinator to realize exhibitions in the College’s Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery and other venues across campus. With the mandate of extending the arts and visual studies through the college community and beyond, the Curator and Programs Coordinator brings exhibition practice in close rapport with the curriculum by curating exhibitions, developing faculty curatorial expertise, and working with visiting curators to mount intellectually and aesthetically challenging exhibits. The Curator and Programs Coordinator collaborates with the Exhibitions Coordinator to research potential exhibitions to bring to or commission for Haverford, helping the Center staff and Steering Committee to determine the final exhibitions schedule. In addition to sharing in the conceptualization of each exhibition, the Exhibitions Coordinator is responsible for its final material manifestation in the gallery, while the Curator and Programs Coordinator organizes lectures, workshops, publications, websites, exhibition-related student projects, residencies, and other points of interaction and public engagement. To this end, the Curator and Programs Coordinator will serve as the primary writer for the Exhibitions Program, ultimately responsible for all associated texts and publicity, with the aim of making the gallery as accessible as possible to diverse constituencies within and beyond the campus. SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborates primarily with Exhibitions Coordinator, as well as with HCAH staff, to research and develop exhibition concepts in concert with faculty, visiting curators, and students, presenting exhibition proposals to the HCAH Steering Committee.
- Meets regularly with faculty to consider curricular links to the Exhibitions Program, either through faculty-curated exhibitions, faculty collaborations with visiting curators, class engagements with the gallery (gallery visits, exhibit-linked assignments, artist-student collaborations/critiques, etc.), or other modes of interaction.
- Oversees or helps generate all writing and publicity linked to the Exhibitions Program, including: catalogues, mailing cards, posters, wall texts, website texts, press releases, and student-generated publications; works with Exhibitions Coordinator, who serves as primary contact for Office of Communications, off-campus graphic designers, and student gallery assistants.
- Works with HCAH Director and Associate Directors to, whenever possible, integrate HCAH initiatives--residencies, symposia, public lectures, reading groups, seminars--with the Exhibitions Program.
- Works with the Center’s Tri-College Creative Arts Residencies Coordinator to connect artist residencies to the Exhibitions Program and curriculum.
- Works with the College’s Assistant Vice President for Academic Resources and Associate Director of Foundation, Corporate, and Government Relations to identify and apply for appropriate exhibitions-related grants.
- Collaborates with the Library and Special Collections to imagine synergies between College Collections, the curriculum, and contemporary artwork featured in the Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery.
QUALIFICATIONS Minimum of five years of museum or gallery experience coordinating exhibitions with knowledge of public and private collections. Deep engagement with contemporary exhibition and artistic practices. Terminal degree in material culture, history of art, curatorial studies, or other relevant academic disciplines, including literature, history, philosophy, or anthropology. Ph. D. preferred. Proven ability to write and edit exhibition catalogs; sharp, imaginative writing skills necessary. Experience working with innovative approaches to display and developing new forms of curatorial practice. Experience teaching at the undergraduate level preferred. Superb writing and analytical skills. Must be able to work collaboratively with faculty, students, administration, artists, and outside curators.
