Deadline: Sunday, October 2nd
Apply to join: ARCHITECTURE ON DISPLAY READING GROUP a dialogic structure in an expanded field
Organized by Andreea Bailuc HC '11 Curatorial & Research Intern, Slought Foundation
Inspired by the Venice Biennale of Architecture and the new book Architecture on Display, this reading group will explore the authority of biennials, the divisions between art and architecture, the direction of contemporary architecture, and the socio-political role of architecture in urban planning. What happens when architecture is created to be shown in a gallery? Does it lose some sense of purpose, or can architecture, when "displayed," gain new publics and new forms?
The group will meet over dinner every other week at the Slought Foundation in West Philadelphia (dates TBD by the group), incorporating tours of several sites in Philadelphia (Eastern State Penitentiary, The Village of Arts and Humanities, guerrilla gardens in West Philly, the Perelman Building of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Book Space, The Divine Lorraine Hotel); conversations will culminate in a group-curated exhibition in the Drop Shot student art space.
To apply, email firstname.lastname@example.org by Sunday, October 2nd at midnight with your name, year, major/minor/interests, and a brief paragraph describing your interest in the reading group, past coursework or experiences you think would be relevant, and brief thoughts on any piece of architecture you find particularly interesting.
