My time spent at the Royal Library of Sweden allowed me to do self-directed and creative research alongside an expert on the library and its resources. I was struck by the Library’s tension between the very old and the cutting edge. On one hand, the Library is responsible for storing extremely ancient manuscripts; on the other hand, the Library must remain up-to-date with digitization. Several different experiences at the library sparked my imagination and allowed me to pull together observations of 17th century manuscripts, theories of media, and the phenomena of technologies like Twitter. I was not only reading books but also had the opportunity to both talk to scholars at the library who were working in related fields, and to study original manuscripts. I hope to develop some of my thoughts into a seminar on medium as the message.
