The Hurford Humanities Center is pleased to sponsor two workshops this fall on documentary film-making techniques, to be conducted by award-winning documentarian Louis Massiah:

1) Documentary Video Workshop

Wednesdays: October 22, 29 - 4:00 to 6:00 PM Saturday: November 1, 8 - 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon Stokes 102

Louis Massiah on the programs: This fall, I will be working with colleagues from Scribe Video Center to present a Video Documentation Workshop for faculty, staff and upper level students at Haverford. The goal of the workshop is to offer techniques of documentary production to individuals who are interested in using video in their own scholarly work (research projects, theses, documentation, etc.)

There are varied approaches to the video documentary, particularly as used by scholars. Some may be embarking on ethnographic documentation projects, others may be considering creating an interview based documentary, or may be interested in oral histories. There are also documentary projects that include archival documents - visual, aural, texts - as part of their structure.

Over the four sessions, the workshop will explore the use of the HDV camcorder, lighting approaches, sound recording techniques, as well as the very basics of Final Cut Pro, non-linear video editing software. We will also look at the some of the organizing tasks that are needed to plan a documentary.

In order to make this workshop as responsive and practical as possible, it is important that participants meet with me in advance to talk about particular goals and needs. This will help to highlight those technologies and approaches that might best help participants realize their projects. If you are interested in taking part, please send me an e-mail by Oct. 1 at lmassiah@haverford.edu so we can arrange a time to talk. I have set aside the afternoon of Monday, October 6, between 1:30 and 5 PM, and Tuesday, October 7, between 3 and 5 PM, to talk with participants in my office at Stokes 111c.

2) Intermediary Documentary Working Group

Wednesdays: October 8, 29 - 6:00 to 7:30 PM

(other dates TBD) (I am hoping this can turn into a dinner meeting, if that works for everyone. I have some portable screen equipment.)

The Intermediary Documentary Working Group is an occasional workshop for faculty members, students and staff who are midway through documentary video projects and seek the support and camaraderie of others on campus to help finish their work. We will review projects in their intermediary forms - treatments, scripts, footage selects, rough cuts - and explore various completion strategies. We will also use the time to screen excerpts from a variety of documentaries that might present solutions to our particular documentary dilemmas. If you are interested in taking part, please send an e-mail with a brief description of your project and its current production status to Louis Massiah at lmassiah@haverford.edu.

[Please note: space will be limited.]

Sponsored by a generous grant from The Leaves of Grass Foundation.
