William Davidon (1927-2013)
William Davidon, Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, has died at age 86.
Professor Emeritus Bill Davidon died on November 8, 2013, at age 86.
An obituary appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer on November 18, 2013. On January 7, 2014, the New York Times published an article that details Davidon's role in a 1971 buglary which provided important early evidence of FBI abuses during the 1960s.
The obituary and article do not mention Davidon's contributions to Mathematics: he was quite famous for launching the field of "quasi-Newton iterations" in 1959. See, for example, the Wikipedia article on the Davidon-Feltcher-Powell formula, or p. 24 of slide show "Who invented the great numerical algorithms?" by Nick Trefethen.
