EXAMS

There will be two in class midterm exams (on Friday February 27 and Friday April 10) and a take home final exam.

ASSIGNMENTS

There will be assignments each week consisting of readings and problem sets.

Readings: It is essential that you study carefully the material covered in the assigned readings. You are responsible for all the readings assigned. In order to fully understand this course it is necessary that you spend several hours a week studying carefully and thinking about the material covered. Whenever you have a doubt or you need further explanations, you are strongly encouraged to ask me either in class or outside of class.

Problem Sets: You are asked to write up solutions to the assigned problems. You can discuss the material covered in class with classmates, but you are obligated under the Honor Code to write up separately, in your own words, the homework papers that you submit. Under no circumstances should a solution be copied from someone else.

The homework will be collected on Fridays in class. Note that LATE WORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED, except in those cases in which you can exhibit a note from your Dean.
After each homework has been collected, solutions to the problems of the corresponding problem set will be posted in a notebook on reserve in Stokes Library. Please do not ever remove this notebook from Stokes Library.
You are encouraged to talk to me whenever you have questions, doubts or comments. You can use my office hours, or you can catch me at the Math Question Center when I work there, or you can talk to me whenever you see me and I am free.

GRADES

Every grade you will receive in this course will be one of: 4.0, 3.7, 3.3, 3.0, 2.7, 2.3, 2.0, 1.7, 1.3, 1.0, 0.0. Your semester grade will be computed by weighting your work as follows:

HOMEWORK: 30% (see note below)
TEST 1: 20%
TEST 2: 20%
FINAL EXAM: 25%
PARTICIPATION and EVERYTHING ELSE: 5%

Note: the lowest grade that you get on the homework this semester will be skipped in the computation of your homework total. Of course, not handing in a homework will correspond to a grade of 0.0.
