assistant professor of mathematics at Princeton and a postdoctoral
fellow at the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications. She
attended college at The University of Chicago and graduate school at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she earned her Ph.D. in

Research and Teaching
Lynne Butler enjoys teaching
algebra and statistics to mathematics majors as well as linear
optimization and game theory to students concentrating in
mathematical economics and cryptography to students concentrating in computer science. She built a
statistics glossary
for natural science faculty at Haverford, and wrote a
movie review of
A Beautiful Mind for the Notices of the American Mathematical Society.
Mathematical
research with undergraduates: introduction to combinatorics and
cryptanalysis, including an animation illustrating a theorem about order
analogues; students mentored, their projects and career paths.
Mathematics
in popular culture: books, movies, and plays about math and
mathematicians; art inspired by mathematics.
Announcements
for students: summer research opportunities; great Web sites,
including math quotes, math games, math software for the
Mac, and Lynne's page on
A Beautiful Mind.

physical chemist at The University of Chicago. After looking at Laurie's
picture, see if you can guess who's who in the picture at right. Lynne had just
recoverd from back
