Email in Japanese
The Haverford Squirrel Mail does not work well with Japanese. To read/write emails written in Japanese, use Gmail or configure email clients such as Mail (Mac only) or Thunderbird (PC and Mac) to your own computer.
You need to activate the Japanese keyboard first. Please see the instructions.
Gmail
Gmail works well with Japanese. You can get a Gmail account for free if you want.
Forwading email:
If you want to forward your Haverford email to your
Gmail, please go to the ACC
website for the instructions.
If you want to use Gmail to send from your Haverford address:
In Gmail, go to
1. Settings
2. Accounts
3. Add another email address
4. Add your Haverford email address
5. Make the haverford email address as default
Mail (Mac only )
If you have a Mac, you can use Mac's
built-in email client, called Mail.app. Mail works
well with Japanese.

Thunderbird (PC and Mac).
For both PC and Mac, you can download a free email client Thunderbird to your computer if you want to. Thunderbird works well with Japanaese.
1. Download and install Thunderbird.
2. Configure
Thunderbird. (These settings are for Haverford students only.)
Everytime you try to send a message written in Japanese, Thunderbird asks you if you want to send anyway, or send in UTF-8. You need to choose UTF-8.
You can set the default charcter encodings so that Thunderbird does not
ask you each time.
For Mac,
1. Go to Thunderbird> Preferences....
2. Display > fonts & encdoings > fonts
3. Character Encodings...
Outgoing mail: UTF-8
Incoming mail: UTF-8
For PC,
1. Go to Tools > Options
2. Display > fonts & encdoings > fonts
3. Character Encodings...
Outgoing mail: UTF-8
Incoming mail: UTF-8
