Email in Chinese

The Haverford Squirrel Mail does not work well with Chinese. To read/write emails written in Chinese, use Gmail or install/configure an email client, Thunderbird (PC and Mac) to your own computer.

You need to activate the Chinese keyboard first. Please see the instructions.

Gmail

Gmail works well with Chinese. You can get a Gmail account for free if you want.

Forwading email:
If you want to forward your Haverford email to your Gmail, please go to the ACC website for the instructions.

If you want to use Gmail to send from your Haverford address:
In Gmail, go to
1. Settings
2. Accounts
3. Add another email address
4. Add your Haverford email address
5. Make the haverford email address as default

Thunderbird (PC and Mac)
If you do not want to use Gmail, you can download Thunderbird to your own computer.

1. Download and install Thunderbird.
2. Configure Thunderbird. (These settings are for Haverford students only.)

Everytime you try to send a message written in Chinese, Thunderbird asks you if you want to send anyway, or send in UTF-8. You need to choose UTF-8.

You can set the default charcter encodings so that Thunderbird does not ask you each time.
For Mac,
1. Go to Thunderbird> Preferences....
2. Display > fonts & encdoings > fonts
3. Character Encodings...

Outgoing mail: UTF-8
Incoming mail: UTF-8

For PC,
1. Go to Tools > Options
2. Display > fonts & encdoings > fonts
3. Character Encodings...

Outgoing mail: UTF-8
Incoming mail: UTF-8
