Preamble. Foreign films include
those from other countries, but not Great Britain or the United States.
Films from Indian subcontinent:
- Call numbers begin with PN1993.5.I8. Cutters are created
from the prominent title, whether in English or Hindi.
- Date by date of the video in hand.
- Genre heading (655) Feature films--India.
Other films:
- Call numbers begin with PN1993.5.
…, according to the double cutters table in the Subject
Cataloging Manual for Shelflisting at G300.
E.g., PN1993.5.I75 for Israel. These numbers
have been established in Tripod; search for SH Feature Films + the country
and you will see what the base number is.
- The second cutter is based on the director’s name,
as established in Tripod (which is based, where possible on the LCNAF).
This is a very important distinction in Chinese- and Japanese language
films, as the name on the container or on the film may be different
from the AACR2 form. If a name is not in the NAF, follow the form in
the Internet Movie Database. If not
there, follow whatever information is available.
- Begin the second cutter with the first letter of the
director’s family name, with two numbers for the next two letters,
according to the standard LC cutter scheme.
- The last two numbers are for the first two letters of
the vernacular title, using line (5) of the LC Cutter Table to choose
the first and second number. This is more of an art than a science;
with luck we will already have something by the director, so you can
alphabetize by title. For Chinese and Japanese titles, use the transliteration
as found in the OCLC record. If there is no OCLC record, use the IMDb.
- Date by date of the video in hand.
- E.g., The 1988 video of Alphaville by Jean Luc Godard
has the call number PN1993.5.F7|bG6331 1988:
F7 for France, G63
for Godard and 31 for the title. E.g.,
The 2003 video of The Emperor and his brother (Chinese title Shu jian
en chou lu) director, as established, Zhu, Yuan, has the call number:
PN1993.5.H6|bZ4979 2003: H6
for Hong Kong (to distinguish them from Mainland Chinese movies), Z49
for Zhu, and 79 for the Chinese title.
- Genre heading (655) Feature films—[country].
