Presidential Papers
Thirteen presidents have served Haverford College (Joseph Harlans, 1857, was Principal, but is traditionally considered to be the first President). A strong feature of the archives is holdings of presidential papers beginning with the papers of Thomas Chase (president from 1875-1886), although in some instances, they are part of their own collections, rather than a part of the archives. Today, presidential papers are most likely to be in a digital format, but in all cases, they are indicative of the way in which Haverford was steered and how external historical events played a role in an administration.
