CARDINAL GIBBONS INSTITUTE (Box 12)
Background: the Cardinal Gibbons Institute was a black industrial
school in southern Maryland affiliated with the Catholic Church
for the purpose of providing "a boarding and day school for
the education of colored youth, where they may be taught the usual
branches of a sound English education, and ... also receive the
instruction and practical training in agricultural, industrial
and mechanical pursuits." Wood was appointed to the Board
of Trustees in 1922.

Wood wrote to N.Y. City Catholics asking for contributions for
the Institute as well as to others in support of the school. Correspondents

I. Walsh and others.
