by the AMERICAN UNION AGAINST MILITARISM (Wood treasurer). A split
in the ranks of the executive committee of AUAM led by Crystal
Eastman and Roger Baldwin led to the formation in 1917 of the
NATIONAL CIVIL LIBERTIES BUREAU as a separate organization. The
AUAM then faded away and the NCLB evolved into the AMERICAN CIVIL
LIBERTIES UNION. [See: In defense of American liberties: A history
of the ACLU by Samuel Walker, JC599.U5 W28 1990]
