Biographical background
Rufus Matthew Jones (1863-1948) was educated at Union Springs (NY) Friends School, Friends School, Providence, RI, Haverford College and Harvard University. He studied languages and philosophy at the University of Heidelberg, taught at several Friends schools. In 1893 Jones became philosophy professor at Haverford College and editor of several Quaker periodicals. Jones undertook graduate philosophy studies at Harvard in 1901 and returned to Haverford as full professor where he remained for 30 years. Throughout this time he was active in the international efforts of Friends through such organizations as World Conference of Friends, American Friends Service Committee, American Friends Fellowship Council, and Wider Quaker Fellowship. During his career Jones published over 50 works related to mysticism, Quakerism and history. (Information from the Dictionary of Quaker Biography, Haverford College).
