Background
Much of this collection concerns the life of Christopher Darlington
Morley (1890-1957) who reached the pinnacle of his popularity
as a writer in the 1930s and 1940s. Best known for his novel Kitty
Foyle, he was, in fact, quintessentially versatile. Erudite
and witty, he probed every literary genre and exhibited a style
of substance and facility. Though he is perhaps best remembered
as a novelist and literary columnist, he is also remembered as
a dramatist, essayist, editor, especially in connection with the
Book-of-the-Month Club, and anthologist of two editions of Bartlett's
Quotations. Morley's poetry which he wrote in free verse and rhymed
had a 17th century lilt to it. His Translations from the Chinese
(1932) is considered some of his best poetry. Then again, his
poetry was transduced into lyrics in collaboration with such song
writers as Jerome Kern.
Christopher Morley will always hold a position of importance
at Haverford, both as one of its august alumni (class of 1910),
and as the son of its well-respected professor, Frank Morley and
Lillian Morley, and brother of two other Haverford graduates,
all three of whom were Rhodes scholars and one (Felix) who came
back to Haverford to become its president. Chris was born in 1890
in neighboring Bryn Mawr, and moved with his family at an early
age to a home on Haverford's campus situated between the library
and observatory which the family named Westward Ho because of
its exposure [Information from Isabel (Mrs. Felix Morley), ALS,
8/24/1985. Other sources include Rothman, Steve. "Kit &
Kitty", Horizons, Summer, 1985 and from internal evidence
by Diana Franzusoff Peterson]. In 1900, the family moved to Baltimore;
Chris returned as a student to Haverford in 1906 where he studied
literature. After his scholarship at Oxford University, he worked
for Doubleday & Co., as editor for the Ladies' Home Journal,
as a columnist for the Philadelphia Ledger and then writing
his long-running colum "Bowling Green" for the New
York Evening Post. In 1924, he helped start the Saturday
Review of Literature. In 1927, Doubleday published the 12-volume
Haverford Collected Edition of his works. He also became known
as a member of the radio panel "Information Please"
as a literature expert and founded the Baker Street Irregulars,
a group dedicated to the life and work of Sherlock Holmes.
With all of his activities, Christopher Morley remained a devoted
Haverfordian throughout his life. It is, thus, not surprising
that Haverford has attempted to achieve a comprehensive collection
of Christopher Morley's printed works, and has, next to the University
of Texas, the largest collection (over 3,000 items) of Morley
manuscript materials. Through the manuscript materials, the original
aggregate of which was given by bequest to Haverford in 1959,
it is possible to glean not only the events of Morley's life,
but also, quite clearly, the way in which his mind worked. This
is often most clear in the letters he wrote -- and he was a prolific
letter writer.
