Haverford College

Reserving A Room in Magill Library

While primarily a place for collections, research and quiet study, Magill Library is also a community gathering place. The Libraries welcome this dual role and seek a balance between the campus community's needs both for group meeting space and for quiet study and research.

If you have any questions not answered below, contact Heidi McKay at hmckay@haverford.edu or 610-896-1160.

Gummere Morley Room (Tier1)

This room, once used to house a browsing collection, is a memorial to two distinguished Haverford teachers, Francis B. Gummere (English) and Frank Morley (Mathematics). A copy of Morley's Theorem hangs in this room as well as portraits of both professors. The room was built in 1966-1968 and replaces an earlier memorial room on the west side of the First Tier.

This room is equipped for group viewing of DVDs and VHS tapes and is used for class meetings scheduled by the Registrar. When it is not needed for classes, faculty and students may reserve this room for group viewing. The Gummere Morley Room can accommodate groups of 8 - 10.

Magill Group Study Room (Tier 2/Main Floor)

  • a 60" High-Definition television
  • a Blu-ray/DVD player (plays Region A/Region 1, respectively)

Philips Wing (Tier2/Main Floor)

The Philips Wing was originally called the North Wing (1864) and was the first Library building. As a memorial to William Pyle Philips '02, this section was renovated in 1952.

Many students use this room as a quiet work area, and much of our material on photography is located on the lower level. To ensure that the space and collections are available for these primary purposes, reserved uses of the Philips Wing are limited. However, it can be reserved for events when appropriate and available.

Rufus Jones Study (Tier2/Main Floor)

Rufus Jones did his undergraduate work at Haverford, taught here for 40 years, and lived on campus until his passing in 1948. This room is a replica of his study at 2 College Circle. His collection on mysticism, nearly 1,000 volumes and letters, is now available for research and study in Quaker and Special Collections.

Faculty and students may reserve this room for group meetings; academic uses are given priority. The Rufus Jones Study provides seating for groups of 5 - 7 individuals.
