Haverford College

What if you can't find an item in the stacks?

If you are not able to find the item you are looking for in the stacks, consider the following:

  1. Check the item's location in Tripod. Is the item you are looking for located at Haverford? If yes, please consult the list of Haverford location codes and maps to be sure you have looked in the correct place for the item. If the item is located at Bryn Mawr or Swarthmore, you may request the item though Tri-College Borrowing or by placing a request at the Reference or Circulation Desk.

  2. Check the item's status in Tripod. Make sure that the item’s status is either Available or InHouse Only. If the item is checked out (there is a date in the status field) or has a status of Lost, Billed, On Order, or On Search, you may request a copy from Bryn Mawr or Swarthmore through Tri-College Borrowing or by placing a request at the Reference or Circulation Desk. If the item is not available at Bryn Mawr or Swarthmore, you may request the book from another library through EZ Borrow or Interlibrary Loan. If the item’s status is New Book Shelf look on the New Book Shelf in the Information Hub on Tier 2 of the library. If an item’s status is one of the following, or if you are unsure of an item’s status, please ask for assistance at the Reference or Circulation Desk:

    • In Cat Dept
    • In Process
    • Bindery Shelf
    • At Bindery
    • In Transit

  3. Check the call number. Once you have checked the item’s location and status in Tripod, you may also want to check that you have read the call number correctly. If you are unsure how to read a Library of Congress call number, ask for assistance at the Reference or Circulation Desk.

  4. Ask for assistance at the Reference or Circulation Desk. If you have taken the above steps and you are still unable to locate the item you are looking for, please ask for assistance at the Reference or Circulation Desk.
