Using Naxos Music Library
The Naxos Music
Library (NML) is a large database of streaming audio from several
record labels, including Naxos, BIS, Chandos, and Hungaraton. To take
full advantage of what Naxos has to offer, here are some tips on browser
and software compatibility and searching.
Connecting to NML For PC Users
- The following settings should work with PCs: MS Windows
98SE, 2000, XP with MS IE 6.0 / Mozilla 1.7.1 / FireFox 1 / Netscape
7.1 and Media Player 9 / 10
Browser Settings: Privacy = Medium, ActiveX controls = Enable, Cookies
= Accept, Pop-up Blocker = Off, Sound Scheme = No Sound.
- Even though NML will work with Firefox, functionality is
somewhat limited. In Firefox, Windows Media Player will not give track
names or times, and sometimes there are connection issues.
- For those of you who prefer to use Firefox, there is a simple
add-on that will open an Internet Explorer tab right inside your
Firefox browser so that you don't have to open a completely new
window to get the functionality you want. I highly recommend installing
this add-on and using it with NML.
- To use this add-on, go to the IETab
page and click on "install now." Restart the browser once
IETab is installed. If it installed properly, you should see a little
Firefox icon in the bottom right-hand corner of the window. Right-click
on the icon; this brings up an IE Tabs site filter (the filter allows
you to set all sites that will open with Internet Explorer). In
the URL box, type "http://haverford.naxosmusiclibrary.com/*"
(without the quotes, substitute your school name for Haverford if
you normally connect at Swarthmore or Bryn Mawr), and click add
and then apply. Restart your browser one more time
and then connect to NML. You should see a new window or
tab opening with an Internet Explorer icon on it (in the bottom
right-hand corner of a new window and on the left-hand side of a
new tab)- this means the settings are correct.
Connecting to NML for Mac users
- The following settings should work with Macs:
OS X 10.4.3 with
o MS IE 5.2 / Mozilla 1.7.12 / Netscape 7.2 / Opera 8.51 / Safari
2.0.2
o Media Player 9.0 or
OS X 10.2.8 / OS X 10.3.5 with
o MS IE 5.2 / Mozilla 1.7 / Netscape 7.1 / Opera 7.53 / Safari 1.0
o Media Player 9.0
OS 8.6 / 9.0 with
o MS IE 5.1 and Media Player 7.1
(MS IE setting: Security Zone = Medium, cookies allowed; Sound setting:
Sound Effect = No)
- Users have found that Safari is generally the best browser
to use with NML.
