Citation: Kovaric, Brian C.; Kokona, Bashkim; Schwab, Alexander D.; Twomey, Margaret A.; de Paula, Julio C.; Fairman, Robert. (2006). “Self-assembly of peptide porphyrin complexes: toward the development of smart biomaterials.” Journal of the American Chemical Society 128(13): 4166-4167.

Author's Summary: This work describes a highly interdisciplinary effort, involving Haverford students and faculty in the Chemistry and Biology Departments, exploring the design of biologically-based materials with photoelectronic activity (light-induced electrical flow). This work would provide the basic scientific breakthroughs to create electrical circuitry at the nanometer length scale (one billionth of a meter). Specifically, we explore the precise geometry of protein-based scaffolds decorated with porphyrin molecules (components important in photosynthesis). It has been published in a premier chemistry journal and thus recognizes the high quality of undergraduate research that happens in the KINSC. Since the primary experimentalists are students, the challenge in writing such a document is to translate the articulate, but scientifically developing, writing style of a student (Brian Kovaric and Margaret Twomey) into the highly stylized and rigorous jargon that is expected of a paper published in the primary literature. Additionally, because the work is so interdisciplinary, it required significant editing by all of the principal investigators (Julio de Paula and myself) with notable contributions from the postdoctoral fellow in the group (Dr. Al Schwab) who is an expert in polymer theory. Important contributions to the experiments were made by my research associate, Bashkim Kokona, who made sure that the scientific legacy left by Brian Kovaric could be smoothly picked up by Margaret Twomey, who helped to finish the project that Brian had started.
