The ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF) is aimed at highly competitive students who wish to pursue graduate careers (Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D) in microbiology. Students will have the opportunity to conduct full time research at their home institutions with an ASM member and present research results at the ASM General Meeting the following year.

In 1993, the Weill Cornell/Rockefeller/Sloan-Kettering Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program became the first MD-PhD Program in the country to establish a summer program for underrepresented minority and disadvantaged college students who wish to pursue the combined MD-PhD degree. While they've "trained" other MD-PhD Programs over the years in running such a successful summer program, to this day, they are the only such program which focuses on freshman and sophomore college students.
