We asked Dr. Sapolsky what technique he used to measure the hippocampal GCR concentrations of the handled and nonhandled rats. His response was that he used a now-outdated technique called Quantitative Autoradiography, which counts individual radioactively-labeled cells as opposed to measuring relative fluorescence of tissue samples. In quantitative radiography, brain sections are radioactively stained and then set to incubate for about six months before individual cells are counted and tallied. When asked how modern techniques could have altered or refined the findings of this study, Dr. Sapolsky mentioned that modern laboratory techniques could have better-explained individual differences among subjects, as well as saved valuable lab time and space.
