In the early 1950s, doctors took cancer cells from the cervix of a 30 year-old woman named Henrietta Lacks without her explicit consent or the knowledge of her family. Since then, researchers all over the world have been using these highly proliferative cells, dubbed HeLa cells, in scientific discovery. In 2010, Rebecca Skloot published the book entitled The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, which details the ethics behind the widespread use of HeLa cells. (15).
