[Xj This
magazine, which means something like "super mixed plate"
magazine, was initiated in Fall 1997 as a joint project
between our three schools. The articles were written by
students at Haverford and the University ofHawaii, with
comments and feedback from our colleagues at Seiryou. While
the articles were written by individual authors, they were
posted ona web bulletin board (HernCrossing) at the
University of Hawaii forcomments before being posted in the
magazine. The name
"Choobarabarazine"resulted from a chat discussion among the
authors at the three schools. It stems first from a trendy
Japanese word, "chooberiberiguu" which is amixture of
Japanese "CHOO" meaning "super," "beriberi," from the
Englishvery very" and "guu" for English "good." A couple of
students felt thatberiberi was not appropriate, and after
considerable back and forthdiscussion in the chat room, they
arrived at the idea of replacing"beriberi" with "barabara,"
which means something like "scattered about, mixed up." Hence
the final title, Choobarabarazine.Wehope to beabletoinvite
students from otherinstitutions tocontribute to this
magazine in the nearfuture. (written by David Ashworth, the
University of Hawaii)
