Course Description:

There will be two parts to the course. One part will be done as a whole class. We will be reading some short novels and newspaper and magazine articles together. We will discuss the material in class, and you will be given short writing assignments on the topics.

Another part will be a research project which will be carried out mainly as individual work in collaboration with your Japanese informants. The goal for the research project is for you to apply the language skills you have gained to researching a Japan-related topic of your interest. If you wish, you can combine the topic with your graduation thesis or a topic for paper for other courses.

You will be using all four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking while gaining a deeper understanding of a cultural aspect of your interest. You will also accumulate vocabulary about your interest.

The research project has proved to be a satisfying learning experience for the students and this will be my third consecutive year giving this project as an assignment.

This year we will be using newer technologies as an essential component of the project, as you can see in theresearch project schedule.(ForEnglish, click here) You will be assisted by your Japanese informants with whom you exchange e-mail. You will even have a chance to meet some of them at our on-line conferences. Through the Internet, broader resources in addition to books and magazines and people you meet locally will be available for you. On-line dictionaries and glossaries will hlep you with your reading on-line.

You will be creating your own Web page midway in the course and at the conclusion. You will be given help with the technical part.

You can look atthe pagesthat the fourth-year students created last year with their research paper.

I would like to evaluate the effect of using these technologies in this project. I will give questionnaires to you at the beginning, at the midpoint and at the conclusion of the project. I would appreciate if you could give me your honest opinions on this all through the semester. I am also hoping to get input from a third party such as a graduate student who might be interested in evaluating this kind of project as well.

Grading

Grades fall into three major categories. Attendance and participation count for one third of the grade, the whole class work one third and the project work the last third. Both the mid-term and final examinations will be take-home. As for the project, the students are asked to self-evaluate. The instructor will take that into account for the final grade for the project.

Honor Code

All work for this course will be done according to the Honor Code. Specifically, all written or other work (assignments, take-home quizzes, etc.) for the course will be done by each student without consultation with other students. Any exceptions to this rule will be stipulated by the instructor when the assignment is made.
