HOUSING INFORMATION
for First-Year students living in
the Haverford College Apartments (HCA)

Haverford College Apartments
(floorplan)

HCA is made up of 21 garden-style, two story apartments located at the south end of Haverford's campus. Each building has eight apartments, four on each floor. First-Year apartments include two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a living/dining area, closets and a bathroom.

HCA MANAGEMENT OFFICE
The HCA Management Office coordinates services for HCA residents. The office is located in the basement of Building # 15 (located on Hannum Drive) with its entrance located at the rear of the building.
The HCA Office telephone number is x1779 (from on-campus) or 610.642.5884 (from off-campus
). Their email is hca@haverford.edu

Apartment Furnishings
The College provides each student with a bed, desk, desk lamp, chair, small bookshelf, and a dresser. All windows have shades. The living room is furnished with seating for three or four, a coffee table and a lamp. In the kitchen, there is a full-sized refrigerator with a freezer section, a stove, a sink with a garbage disposal, and storage cabinets. Toilet paper and basic cleaning supplies are provided. Vacuum cleaners are available for use through the HCA office.
Students are responsible for providing their own bedding (sheets*, mattress covers, blankets, bedspreads), pillow, blankets, towels, wastebasket, clothes hangers and telephone. In addition, students are responsible for providing their own dishes, utensils, pots and pans, etc. A flashlight is also a good idea for the rare case of a power outage. There is plenty of room for plants and extra furniture.
*PLEASE NOTE: mattresses are extra long 36" x 80" x 6".

Mailing & Shipping
Each student has a campus mailbox. You will receive information about your box number in the Non-Academic Registration mailing sent to you in late July. You may ship trunks and packages to yourself, but they should arrive no earlier than August 224. Please note that the College assumes no responsibility for damage to or loss of any personal property.

The mail room is located in the Whitehead Campus Center.

The mailing address for your campus mailbox is:
  (YOUR NAME)
Haverford College
370 Lancaster Avenue
Haverford, PA 19041-1392

*Please note: your campus mailbox number nor your campus housing are part of your campus address.

Students living at HCA have a second mailbox located at HCA, where all mail is delivered to individual apartment mailboxes located in cluster boxes. Most students, however, chose to receive all of their mail in their campus mailbox. All College mail is sent to your campus mailbox. The key to your apartment also opens your mailbox. Please note that HCA is actually located in Ardmore, even though it is part of the campus. The front of each mailbox shows only the building and apartment number: no names appear on the exterior of the boxes. This makes it imperative that mail addressed to you at HCA include both the building and apartment number in the address.

The mailing address for your apartment mailbox should look like this:
  (YOUR NAME)
# Hannum Drive, Apt. #
Ardmore, PA 19003

Appliances & Other items
Satellite dishes, candles, halogen lamps and large electrical appliances are prohibited in College housing. Low-wattage appliances such as electric blankets, coffee makers, and microwaves are allowed.

Telephone Service
Haverford College's local and long-distance telephone program is managed by STC Services®. Students are responsible for providing their own telephone. You will receive your phone number and PIN when you arrive on campus. Please set up your account and voicemail box as soon as possible and let your parent(s) or guardian(s) know your telephone number. For more information, please also see http://www.haverford.edu/telephone/studentphone.php.

Pets
Students should not bring any animals to the College. Fur-bearing animals, such as cats, dogs, gerbils, hamsters, mice and rabbits are not permitted in College housing at any time. Any student who is found keeping a fur-bearing animal in a Haverford residence hall or apartment will lose the right to live in College housing and will have to move out within two days. The pet will have to be removed from the dorm the day the animal is discovered or the owner will be fined $100.00. There are no exceptions to this rule. Fish, birds and small reptiles are allowed as long as your roommate or those around you don't object, although these animals are not recommended either. If you want to bring an approved animal with you, it is only polite that you check with those with whom you'll be sharing housing.

Vehicles & Bicylces
First year students are not permitted to have automobiles, motorcycles or motorbikes unless they have been given permission by their dean to commute from home.
Students may bring bicycles and are responsible for providing their own bike lock. There are a number of bicycle sheds and "ribbon" bike racks located throughout the campus. All students bringing bicycles to school are required to register them, free of charge, with Safety & Security.

Air Conditioners
Haverford's residence halls are not air conditioned. The College does accommodate students who have a documented medical need for air conditioning. A current letter from your physician, specifically stating the medical need for air conditioning, must be filed with the Housing Office by July 25, 2008. You may send it by FAX (610.896.4960) or by mail. Students who have been given permission to use an air conditioner must provide their own unit and will be sent further information about Haverford's air conditioner policy, installation and fees.

Room Decorations
Room or suite decorations are encouraged as a means of personalizing a living space. Students should attach memo boards, posters, and similar items to walls or doors using poster putty. Students may not write, paint or otherwise mark on any surface in any residence hall. Thumbtacks, nails and tape are not permitted as they damage walls.

Smoking Policy

The College has adopted a smoking policy to protect individuals who do not wish to be exposed to smoke of any kind. All non-residential buildings have been designated "smoke-free areas". No one may smoke inside any such building, and smokers should take care not to cause others discomfort when smoking too close to an entrance of such a building.

Students' Council has determined that smoking should be permitted in student housing so long as no other resident(s) object. Smoking in College housing is a privilege, not a right.

Please link to The Smoking Policy & Smoke-Free Housing for further information and to read the full policy.

Storage
There is one storage bin for each apartment. Students living in the apartments must use the bin assigned to their specific apartment and are responsible for supplying their own padlocks and keys. Please make sure you padlock your bin.

Township regulations prohibit the storage of items in any area of the basement except inside the bins. Personal items left in any other location will be removed and discarded without notice. The storage bins are located inside a locked storage room. When you receive your Students' Guide, please make sure to read the Storage section for information about Spring Cleaning of the storage bins and storage areas, and storage access. Be aware that sometimes it may be necessary for College staff to enter the storage areas on College business.

Other Helpful Hints
Get to know and seek the assistance of your Customs People (CP) and your Upperclass Advisor (UCA). They have "been there" and are committed to helping you.

When you meet your new roommate or members of your hall group or floor, be sure to set aside time to discuss your individual living styles. It will be easier for all of you throughout the year if you come to an early agreement concerning quiet study times, stereo levels, smoking, and the like.

Within several days of your arrival, please e-mail, write, or call your parents or guardians to let them know how you are doing and give them your telephone number. Every fall we receive calls from parents or guardians who have received no e-mail, letter, or call and are very concerned that something may be wrong.

Develop the habit of locking your door and windows when you are away from your room, and always lock your door when you retire at night. Dorm security is the responsibility of all residents. If you see something of a suspicious nature, please contact Safety & Security immediately at 610-896-1111 or use one of the blue light emergency phones located outside of the dorms and throughout the campus. Any theft, robbery, or assault should be reported to Safety & Security immediately.

If you expect to be away from campus for any length of time, such as a weekend or longer, make sure you tell your roommate(s) as well as at least one of your Customs People and/or your UCA about your plans. Customs groups are rather like families; the members care about each other!
