Discovering the Discovery and the Grandfather Who Saved Millions

Carl Sigmond ’13, through a grant from the Hurford Center for Arts and Humanities and the Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center, documented the life and legacy of his grandfather, Albert Schatz, who discovered streptomycin, the first antibiotic effective against tuberculosis.

This year the Center for Peace and Global Citizenship, the John B. Hurford ’60 Center for Arts and Humanities and the Marian E. Koshland Integrated Science Center sponsored summer work, research and internships for almost 150 students.

The Departments of astronomy, biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, and psychology are housed in the state-of-the-art Koshland Integrated Natural Sciences Center (KINSC).

Through funding from the KINSC’s travel stipend program, Katie Sheline ’13 was able to join Environmental chemist Helen White as part of a team of scientists on a research cruise that studied the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
