“Haverford” in Welsh, according to one translation, means “goat crossing.” Last week, we welcomed a herd of those furry, hoofed creatures to campus as a means of keeping invasive plant species under control.

Haverford libraries own more than 625,000 titles, including not only printed books but thousands of items in other formats—microfilm, photographs, diaries, letters, sound and video recordings, electronic publications, and miscellaneous ephemera.

Best known for railroad photography, O. Winston Link also shot promotional images of Haverford and many are in Special Collections.

The Haverford campus is the oldest planned college landscape in the country. Our meticulously maintained 200 acres contain a nature trail, a Pinetum and flower gardens.

After two years as interim president, Joanne V. Creighton returns to western Massachusetts where she will be teaching as a Five College Professor at UMass. Her successor, Dan Weiss, takes office July 1.

The Haverford College Libraries act as a locus of intellectual activity supporting the teaching, research and learning needs of the Haverford community. Infused with Haverford’s Quaker heritage and values, they support the mission of the College to develop academic excellence and personal growth through a liberal arts education.

Then & Now: Campus Visits

Today, well over 15,000 prospective students and their families come to Haverford each year for campus tours conducted by a troupe of 30 student guides who volunteer for the Admission office.

Magill Library houses more than half a million volumes and provides access to 2.5 million more through a catalog system that connects it to libraries at neighboring Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore Colleges.

Today Tritton and Kim Halls are the new dorms on the block. What hasn’t changed is just how essential living on campus is to the Haverford experience.
