Alexander Kitroeff's teaching is informed by his training and research in the modern history of nationalism and ethnicity in Europe and especially the Balkans and the Mediterranean region. His introductory level course examines the ways the Mediterranean world responded to the challenges of modernity. Kitroeff's four intermediate level courses examine the impact of nationalism & ethnic cleansing in the Balkans in the C19-20th; the transformation of the Ottoman world into nation states through personal memoirs; social and political identities and sport and he is developing a course on Southeastern European immigrants in the United States. At the advanced level he offers courses on theories of nationalism and diasporas and nation states.

Kitroeff's research revolves around the study identity in modern Greece and its diaspora. He published three books on these topics, The Greeks in Egypt, 1919-1937: Ethnicity & Class (London, 1989); Griegos en América [The Greeks in the Americas] (Madrid, 1992); Wrestling with the Ancients: Modern Greek Identity and the Olympics (New York, 2004); and Ελλάς Ευρώπη, Παναθηναϊκός! 100 Χρόνια Ελληνική Ιστορία [Hellas, Europe, Panathinaikos! 100 Years of Greek History] (New York, 2010) as well a number of chapters in collected volumes and articles in scholarly journals, in English, Greek and French. He is currently completing a short history of Greek nationalism and is working on two books on Greek American history.
