Greece & the Olympics

My interest in Greece and the Olympics grew out of my study of late-C19th Greek nationalism and understanding that the first modern Olympics held in Athens of 1896 provided a platform for the expression of all three strands of Greekness, the continuity with the Ancient past, the cultural definition of nationhood and the claim to Europeaness. My research and publications on this subject explore the manifestation of those aspects of Greekness over the entire history of the modern Olympics with an emphasis on the Athens 2004 Games.
