The History Department is home to scholars trained in cultural, social and intellectual history, with specializations in many world regions--the United States Emma Lapsansky, Bethel Saler, Paul Jefferson, and Roger Lane, Latin America (James Krippner); History of Science Darin Hayton; East Asia (Paul Smith) and Europe Linda Gerstein, Lisa Jane Graham, Alexander Kitroeff and Susan Stuard, Emeritus. In addition, as a result of our regional cooperation agreements, Haverford College History students have the opportunity to study virtually any world region, historical epoch and research methodology.

As a department, we are committed to fostering the understanding of specific histories (regional, national, cultural, ethnic, racial, class, gender, sexual, etc.) on their own terms, but also as comparable and frequently connected processes across space and over time. In this spirit, we also encourage students to integrate their history major with Areas of Concentration such as Africana Studies; East Asian Studies; Latin American and Iberian Studies; Feminist and Gender Studies, and Peace and Conflict Studies. We also encourage students to study abroad. Though the Department has no specific language requirement, research opportunities in History 361 (Junior Seminar) and History 400 (Senior Thesis) are often enhanced by knowledge of a foreign language. In addition, some advanced courses have foreign language requirements.
