One of the important lessons I learned from my undergraduate education at one of the country's most prestigious small liberal arts colleges was how to think critically: to read closely, examine a situation, grapple, consider as many possible circumstances contributing to an issue, and then offer an intellectually sound response. I have earned respect by my non-Haverford friends, colleagues, and family members for the insight I offer in many situations, and I am thankful to the College for forming me in such a way. I make a conscientious effort to impart the lessons I've learned at Haverford to my own high school students in my classes.

As a full-grown adult, I’ve gone out to eat with my parents and when the bill came tried to get them to take money to cover my share. But they wouldn’t take it. They said, "Put your money away. You'll buy dinner for your grown kids. That's how you'll pay me back." That, in part, is why I give to Haverford. The cost of my Haverford education was subsidized by generous alums before me. They won't take my money. So I'll chip in toward the next generation's bill.

As a nonprofit executive, I had the privilege of recruiting young Haverfordians to northern Michigan. Quite simply, Haverford changed my life. As a student from a blue collar family, I could not have afforded to go to Haverford had it not been for the need-blind admission policy and financial aid they provided. That was the first of many gifts that Haverford gave me. I am reflecting on that especially often now, as I prepare to teach for the first time at a small Jesuit University that also prides itself on community and academic integrity. I don't have a huge amount of money to give this year, but as a high school special education teacher, I have constant occasion to recall what a fantastic opportunity it was to take part in Haverford's unique educational community. On any given day, the top priority for my students is to learn careful reflection, as well as concern and respect for others. These things may sound familiar as essential features of the Haverford way, and I've sought to make them essential features of my own classroom.

Haverford's Annual Fund: Parents' Fund

The 1833 Society • The Sharpless Society • Alumni Participation • Impact • Parents' Fund

The Parents' Fund is an unrestricted annual giving fund that, like the general Annual Fund, provides current year operating support.

Gifts to the Parents' Fund support the complete Haverford experience, by creating opportunities for student-faculty research, sustaining student financial aid, and providing for increased student co-curricular activities on campus. All gifts to the Parents' Fund are used in the current year, so gifts benefit your own child as well as his or her classmates. Grandparents and Past Parents are also welcome to support the Parents' Fund.

Making a gift to the Parents' Fund is a wonderful way to show support for your child's education. We welcome gifts of all sizes. Last year, more than 1,000 parents, past parents, and grandparents contributed to the Parents' Fund, giving $399,640 that directly benefitted the student experience at Haverford.
