Quite simply, Haverford changed my life. As a student from a blue collar family, I could not have afforded to go to Haverford had it not been for the need-blind admission policy and financial aid they provided. That was the first of many gifts that Haverford gave me. I am reflecting on that especially often now, as I prepare to teach for the first time at a small Jesuit University that also prides itself on community and academic integrity. I am glad to be giving back in any way I can.

As a full-grown adult, I’ve gone out to eat with my parents and when the bill came tried to get them to take money to cover my share. But they wouldn’t take it. They said, "Put your money away. You'll buy dinner for your grown kids. That's how you'll pay me back." That, in part, is why I give to Haverford. The cost of my Haverford education was subsidized by generous alums before me. They won't take my money. So I'll chip in toward the next generation's bill.

I received a full scholarship to attend Haverford, from Ghana. I got an excellent education that enabled me to enter graduate school and prepared me for a rewarding and fulfilling life as a citizen of the world, a parent and a professional. I will recommend it to anyone who is ready to accept the challenges and responsibilities of being a Haverfordian. I met my wife there, and I am proud that my daughter decided to enroll (Class of 2015). I donate at the 1833 Society level in appreciation of Haverford’s positive effect and impact that I have benefited from.

I truly value the education that I received at Haverford, both in and outside of classes. My introduction to Quakerism's core values and practices influenced many of the contacts and experiences I have had in years since graduating. I also believe that a small liberal arts college was exactly right for me at that point in my life. I want to make sure that other students have the opportunity to participate in a similar community, with all of its richness.

I don't have a huge amount of money to give this year, but as a high school special education teacher, I have constant occasion to recall what a fantastic opportunity it was to take part in Haverford's unique educational community. On any given day, the top priority for my students is to learn careful reflection, as well as concern and respect for others. These things may sound familiar as essential features of the Haverford way, and I've sought to make them essential features of my own classroom.

I donate to honor the College and express my allegiance to an institution that produces great students and prepares them for a life of significance and participation in the world. As a nonprofit executive, I had the privilege of recruiting young Haverfordians to northern Michigan. I learned all over again how the College helps to inspire talented men and women to make a difference in their own lives and for the public good. My modest gift recognizes those very big accomplishments.

Haverford was a pivotal experience in my life and helped to shape who I have become and what I have tried to do with my life. The young alums that I meet through college and work connections continue to embody what I believe Haverford is all about: Helping to stimulate women and men to lead lives of informed and passionate commitment to leaving the world a slightly better place than they found it.

Haverford was an ideal place for me to grow. The rigor of the curriculum helped me develop my mind and my confidence. The honor code and culture of open dialogue helped me become more self-aware and empathetic. Haverford was a rich journey for me, not just an educational experience. As I grow older, I am increasingly aware of the impact Haverford had, and has, on my life. I am profoundly grateful for that, and I want to give back to the best of my ability. I continue to enjoy engaging relationships with other Haverford alumni, and the ties continue to strengthen. We give because Haverford provided a superior education for our daughter. We need your help to reach our 2012-2013 fiscal year goal of raising $5,750,000 with 50% alumni participation.

Every alumni gift, no matter what the size, helps make a difference for the College. Participation, at any level, demonstrates the strong connection alumni have to Haverford and its mission. The percentage of alumni participation is sometimes used as a benchmark by outside funders. Each fiscal year Annual Fund goals include both total dollars raised and alumni participation.
