German 101

BMC MWF: 11-12

Weimar Republic | das Kino | Course Plan

The goal of this course is to build on the basic language skills acquired in Beginning German. It is assumed that you have already learned the basic concepts of German. We will have a thorough and intensive review of grammar and improve oral and written skills.

You must attend class and contribute; otherwise you will be lost. You will have written homework assignments; it is critical that you do them because we only meet for 3 hours each week.

Required Texts

Bansleben, Manfred: Perspektiven. Texte zur Kultur und Literatur. Harcourt Brace,1987

Bansleben, Manfred: Perspektiven. Übungen zur Grammatik. Harcourt Brace, 1987

Grading

Tests: There will be 5 chapter tests during the semester covering grammar, vocabulary, the readings, and possibly aural comprehension.

Final: cumulative

Participation: This is not an attendance grade but an evaluation of your involvement in class activities. Tardiness, absences, speaking too much English and sluggish group work will result in a lower grade.

Compositions: There will be 4 compositions to be written on topics assigned by the instructor. They will range from 150-250 words.

Homework: homework will be assigned, collected and checked by the instructor. It will not be graded. The point value will range from 2 to 6 points per exercise. To obtain full credit, you must turn in the assignments on the date when they are due.

Weimar Republic

Thoughout the semester, you will be answering questions on video clips from movies from the Weimar Republic(1919-1933), the classic period of (early) German cinema. The listing of clips appears below. To understand the cultural background of the movies, you will also be assigned readings on the Weimar Republic. There are three levels of difficulty.
