Plan
The goal of this course is to build on the basic language skills
acquired in Beginning German. It is assumed that you have already
learned the basic concepts of German. We will have a thorough and
intensive review of grammar and improve oral and written skills.
You must attend class and contribute; otherwise you will be lost.
You will have written homework assignments; it is critical that you
do them because we only meet for 3 hours each week.

compositions to be written on topics assigned by the instructor. They
will range from 150-250 words.
Homework: homework will be assigned,
collected and checked by the instructor. It will not be graded. The
point value will range from 2 to 6 points per exercise. To obtain
full credit, you must turn in the assignments on the date when they
are due.
Weimar Republic
Thoughout the semester, you will be answering questions on video
clips from movies from the Weimar Republic(1919-1933), the classic
period of (early) German cinema. The listing of clips appears below.
To understand the cultural background of the movies, you will also be
assigned readings on the Weimar Republic. There are three levels of
difficulty. To access the introduction (which has a glossary) click
